Excerpt: 13 Napa Valley Reds - Wine Spectator
13 Napa Valley Reds Appealing California wines, including Napa Cabernets priced at $20 or less and outstanding Syrahs MaryAnn Worobiec This week we feature a baker’s dozen of red wines from that most famous of California appellations, Napa Valley. As you might expect from Napa, the list includes some Cabernet Sauvignons, but these aren’t difficult-to-find, break-the-bank versions. Rather, they’re bottles that cost $20 or less. Included in this list is the debut of Turn Four, a new label by Bennett Lane. If the name rings bells with racing fans, they won’t be surprised to know that Bennett Lane owner Randy Lynch is a former racecar driver and current NASCAR team owner. Cameron Hughes continues to develop his line of value wines and now has multiple bottlings of Napa Valley Cabernet, including the subtle and complex Stags Leap District bottling featured in this report. Napa Smith Brewery has expanded their operation to include wine, and their impressive, sleek and focused 2007 Napa Merlot is the first bottling we’ve seen from them. Merlot fans should also take note of the PlumpJack and Burgess offerings here. There are also plenty of Syrah and Rhône-style blends that hail from Napa. The JC Cellars and Skylark bottlings tap grapes from two of the most well-known Syrah vineyards—Caldwell and Stagecoach. Shafer’s Syrah/Petite Sirah blend, Relentless, honors their winemaker, Elias Fernandez. “Mixed blacks” is an archaic wine term that referred to field blends of multiple grapes that are fermented together, and the Girard version blends together Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Grenache and Mourvèdre.
4 BEARS Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Sean Minor 2007 Score: 87 | $17 Supple, graceful, complex and harmonious, this is firm and taut, with spicy plum, currant, cedar and mineral notes. Drink now through 2014. 12,000 cases made. —J.L. |

California Winemaker Has Roots in Kansas
The Wichita Eagle
Kansas.com Sean Minor says his Kansas upbringing isn't too odd a background for a California winemaker. "My parents always enjoyed wines, and my mother's side of the family, we're all farmers," Minor said while in Wichita recently to promote his Four Bears wines. |

Connoisseurs Guide to California Wines
Connoisseurs Guide to California Wines
Volume 32, Issue 5 - March 2008 Sauvignon Blanc first became popular as a fresh and fruity libation poured by the pitcher in bistros and zinc bars. Its soon saw it grow into something more, and, while the top editions of the grape today are never far from the zesty end of the spectrum, they take on extra dimensions of depth and range. That said, the fresh, bright versions continue to be popular both for usefulness with food as well as for their value. > read more |

Wine of the Week: A White To Lift The Spirits
The Missoulian
Winter is a time of robust flavors and hearty foods. We tend to gravitate to those rich sauces, heavy meats and earthy root vegetables, and often choose lush, deep red wines to accompany them. So it was a bit of a shock to my system the other day as I sat down with Sean Minor, winemaker and owner of 4 Bears Winery, to sample his Sauvignon Blanc. Let me tell you, this glass of snappy white wine was just what I needed to lift my spirits on a very gray and gloomy wintry day. Furthermore, it was the ideal accompaniment to a bowl of warm, creamy and comforting sweet potato soup that was helping to take the edge off the cold weather. > read more |

The Price of Knowing
Corkheads
For Wine Geeks in the Bay Area and Beyond Just last week, I sat down with Four Bears winemaker Sean Minor and tasted through his portfolio. Not only is his Cabernet Sauvignon among my picks for the best Napa Cabs under $40 (yes, they DO exist) but his Sauvignon Blanc, made from Dry Creek Valley fruit, was a sophisticated example of this often lean wine, and with an easy price tag to boot. > read more |

Four Bears Wine Blends
Dallas Morning News
Four Bears wines have a lot in common with the Goldilocks tale that inspired the name. Over lunch at Ferré recently, owner Sean Minor talked about being in the kitchen discussing blends for his new wine venture when his 5-year-old daughter walked in. After he explained what he was doing, she said he must be looking for a blend that was "just right," like the little girl in the home of the three bears. A wine name was born. > read more |

Rave Reviews from Paul Root
4-Bears is a family business which produces a delicious Napa Valley Cabernet and a superb Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are priced at extremely attractive price-points and are of hugely disproportionate quality when compared with varietals of the same appellations.
